Balloons Used to Illegally Transport Cigarettes Forced Closure of Vilnius Airport
Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when numerous of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
